A look at Catania shows the advantages and disadvantages of Ornaghi: Although Ornaghi indicates only use in 1889, I can show almost the entire period of use of the bar number cancels. Ornaghi reports only cancels he has seen. And the period of the number cancels is definitely not the focus of his interest. Despite or because of this Ornaghi is the main source.
Paolo Vaccari is interested in number cancels not in machine cancels. His focus are the pointed number cancels, which are used before the introduction of the Bollatrice. For some places Vaccari is a very good source, while other are listed rather sparse. For the post-historical background Vaccari is essential, also because this exists in English.
Even more than Vaccari the data for the different provinces vary. For some sites the use dates given include different types for the same text. For other sites different texts are combined into one entry. The post-historical part - which is present only in Italian - makes a decisive mistake when it comes to the distinction between Dani and Daguin machines.
In contrast to [Ornaghi] here each stamp is shown. This clarifies some issues. And it shows the progress made in the years up to the publication og the main work. In total this shows 76 cancels from 25 cities. >

The Dani machine is shown here with a cancel from Cuneo, a cancel which should exist according to the announcement in the Bulletin, but are neither mentioned by Vaccari nor Ornaghi.
