Naples (Italian: Napoli, Neapolitan: Napule) is a city in Southern Italy,
situated on the country’s west coast by the Gulf of Naples.
Lying between two notable volcanic regions, Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields,
it is the capital of the region of Campania and of the province of Naples.
As of July 2011, Naples has a population of 957,465 within its administrative limits.
The city’s population rose from 621,000 in 1901 to 1,226,000 in 1971,
before declining as city-dwellers moved to the suburbs.
